Only a few cars but a great finish in Race 3.
Four Mustangs, a Charger, a Torana and a brave BMW fronted qualifying at Victoria’s best circuit on September 28 for Round 5 of the Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships.
Andy Clempson’s monster 351 Fastback took pole with an easy 1.49.1 ahead of Darryl Hansen’s 302 1968 Mustang .4 seconds in arrears and Michael Miceli’s Boss 302 Fastback ambling around in 1.52.2, just ahead of Glenn Miles’ Charger at 1.52.4 to fill the first two rows on the grid. Stephen Pillekers’ Torana and Brent Trengrove in his father’s Nb Mustang were next with Rob van Stokrom not unsurprisingly further back in the lone 4-cylinder car on the track.
Saturday afternoon’s 5-lapper saw Hansen take the win two seconds ahead of Clempson, with a gap to Miceli in third and revitalized Brent Trengrove battling with Stephen Pillekers, Glenn Miles and Rob van Stokrom. Alan Brown (welcome back!) joined the race not having practiced and felt his way around, testing the car. The next morning’s 6-lapper was basically a carbon copy result, save for a fourth place for Miles and Trengrove slowing to finish behind Pillekers, van Stokrom following and Brown not completing the race.
Race 3 over 9 laps in the afternoon saw another win for Hansen, but Miceli had elevated himself right up there, getting past Clempson on Lap 6 and finishing just .4 sec away from a win, while setting fastest lap. Clempson eased off allowing Miles to catch right up, while Trengrove finished in front of Pillekers and van Stokrom in a spread out field. Brown had the Torana working better and cut his previous lap time right down.
